I have family who are teachers and principals and what have you, so I seen my share of teachers retiring. When I heard that Doamna Nastya, one of our oldest teachers, is retiring this year, I figured she’d do a masa for the other teachers, as usual. But as is always the case with Moldovans in my village, she had to one-up everyone and put on the biggest masa ever.
I was around and not teaching so I offered to help her. This turned into me and 5 other Moldovan women working from about 8am to 2pm when everyone showed up. Doamna Nastya was running around screaming at everyone that it all had to be perfect and that if one olive was out of place everyone would not remember her fondly.
See pictures below for a sense of how big this freaking meal was. All in all she used 3 ducks, 4 giant salamis, a whole block of homemade head cheese, about a kilo of veggies, and a bucket of mayonnaise. She also brought 3 liters of vodka, 2 liters of wine, and enough cake to choke a horse. And just think: When I retire I’ll probably just bring in cupcakes.
Noapte Buna!
